One 3D printing stock currently stands out as the best long-term bet among the six pure plays.

Most of the pure-play 3D printing companies — including industry heavyweights3D Systems(NYSE:DDD)andStratasys(NASDAQ:SSYS)– have been struggling over the last few years to grow revenue and to turn a profit due to a widespread slowdown in demand for their products.

Nonetheless, projected long-term growth dynamics for the industry remain very rosy. You might believe, as I do, that this means its likely that at least one of the current crop of pure-play 3D printing stocks will be a long-term winner, despite increased competition from compelling new entrants such asHP Inc.,General Electric(NYSE:GE), and venture-backed Carbon.

Arcam(NASDAQOTH:AMAVF)remains themost attractive long-term investment among the pure-play 3D printing stocks, in my opinion. Since I called the Swedish industrial metal 3D printing specialist thebest 3D printing stock to buyin Sept. 2015, its gained a scorching 143%, through Jan. 27. For context, 3D Systems is up nearly 27%, Stratasys is down 32%,ExOneis up 39%,Materialiseis up 3%,voxeljethas dropped 45%, and theS&P 500has returned about 21% over this nearly 17-month period.

The first thing to know about Arcam is that late last year, General Electric acquired a controlling stake — 76.15% to be exact — in the company. GEs purchase wasnt much of a surprise, as the digital industrial giant has been beefing up its metal 3D printing capabilities for several years and has long been one of Arcams customers.

Arcam makes 3D printers, powered by its proprietary electron beam melting (EBM) technology, that print in metals. Its target markets are the medical implant and aerospace industries. The company has two subsidiaries: AP&C, based in Canada, produces titanium powder for 3D printing and other applications. DiSanto, based in Connecticut, is an orthopedic-implant contract manufacturer that uses Arcams 3D printers and other machines in its business.

The primary reason Arcam remains the best 3D printing stock to buy is simple: Although the companys 2016 financial results are on track to fall short of its robust 2015 results, its business has generally been performing well over the last few years. Meanwhile, the other pure-play 3D printing companies have largely been struggling. Notably, Arcam is the only one of the six pure plays thats profitable on a trailing-12-month basis.

Arcams revenue and net income growth dynamics over the last several years have been better than those of 3D Systems and Stratasys (as well as the other pure-play 3D printing companies not shown). Data byYCharts.

Another reason to favor Arcam is that it focuses solely on metals. Metal 3D printing has been the fastest-growth space within the 3D printing industry. Moreover, this specialization better insulates Arcam from competition from HP and Carbon, both of which launched speedy polymer 3D printers for the enterprise market in 2016.

Arcam has just one 3D-printing technology. So, if another metal 3D-printing tech advances more quickly than EBM, Arcam could face difficulties. This risk, though, has been greatly reduced by GEs purchase of a controlling stake in the company.

Additionally, the stock isextremelypricey, sporting a trailing-12-month price-to-earnings ratio of 748. Thats nosebleed territory, with much future growth already priced in. So, only investors comfortable with volatility and truly long-term focused should consider investing in Arcam.

Investors should pass on ExOne and voxeljet, as neither company has yet to demonstrate that it can profitably grow its business. Materialise, which was profitable before its 2014 IPO and soon thereafter, remains a company to watch. It sells 3D printing software and provides 3D-printing services.

Some folks may wonder aboutProto Labs: This is asolid company that seems to have good long-term growth potential. However, the quick-turn manufacturing service provider is far from a pure-play 3D printing stock, so it wasnt included in this analysis. In the third quarter, just 12% of Proto Labs revenue was generated from 3D printing.

As for 3D Systems and Stratasys, while there are no guarantees, their industry-leading sizes and valuable intellectual property should help provide them with staying power. Notably, 3D Systems has the largest combined 3D printing personalized surgery and medical device services and production operation in the industry. One of Stratasys top strengths, in my opinion, is its highly regarded line of multicolor, multimaterial 3D printers.

However, both companies — especially 3D Systems — have made big missteps in recent years. Stratasys desktop subsidiary, MakerBot, imploded after the company released the fifth-generation Replicator with widespread quality issues. 3D Systems manic acquisition activity over several years likely resulted in the company failing to adequately nurture its existing businesses.

The leadership teams under which these and other notable missteps occurred are gone. Both companies appointed new CEOs in 2016, while a new CFO joined 3D Systems last year and Stratasys this year. At this early stage, however, we dont know how successful either top management team will be.

In short, 3D Systems and Stratasys both have thepotentialto be solid long-term winners. But Arcam — which has been led by the same CEO and CFO for many years — has more successfully demonstrated that it has what it takes in the here and now to be a long-term winner.

WhenThe Economistreferred to 3D printing as the Third Industrial Revolution in April 2012, it didnt take long for investors and the media to become enamored with the technology, which holds the potential to revolutionize the way things are made and how inventory is managed and to usher in a new world of mass customization.

At the time, the investing implications seemed staggering: Worldwide manufacturing produces about $12.8 trillion in economic output each year, and a small chunk of that could add up to big profits for the handful of 3D printing stocks that existed then.

As continued media coverage and investor excitement crept into the sector, it sent 3D printing stocks on a parabolic rise, reflecting extreme optimism about technologys promising future. However, once investors realized that the Third Industrial Revolution wasnt going to happen overnight, and companies failed to live up to their lofty expectations, the majority of 3D printing stocks no longer appeared to be worth their weight in 3D-printed selfies.

From a long-term investors point of view, the sell-off in 3D printing stocks that got us here today could be viewed as a positive development, because many companies are now trading at more reasonable valuations relative to their still-promising long-term growth prospects.

According to Wohlers Report 2014, a leading 3D printing insights report, worldwide 3D printing revenues are expected to grow by more than 31% per year between 2013 and 2020, translating to a nearly sixfold increase in size over seven years. What was a $3.07 billion industry in 2013 is forecast to generate over $21 billion in revenue by 2020.

If I had to pick just the best 3D printing stocks to buy and hold through 2020, my money would be onStratasys(NASDAQ:SSYS)andProto Labs(NYSE:PRLB).

The Gillette razor of 3D printingThrough the end of the first quarter, Stratasys has sold more than 129,000 3D printers since creating its MakerBot, Objet, and Stratasys brands. This market-leading installed base feeds the companys razor-and-blade business model, where the 3D printers it sells act as the razors and the materials they consume over their life cycles act as the blades.

Ultimately, a large installed base of 3D printers lays the foundation for creating a healthy long-term recurring revenue stream for materials, which tend to carry higher profit margins than 3D printing hardware. These favorable margins suggest that a growing installed base could positively impact earnings in the long run by driving increased consumables revenues. During the first quarter, Stratasys consumables revenue increased by 18% year over year, or 25% after accounting for currency fluctuations.

Despite this core strength, Stratasys has experienced several challenges in recent quarters, which have negatively weighed on shares. Most notably, a softening capital spending environment, currency headwinds brought on by the strong U.S. dollar, and several missteps with MakerBot have raised questions about Stratasys nearer term prospects. Potential investors should consider whether management can successfully navigate these challenges in ways that keep the underlying strength of its business and brand intact over the long haul.

Bending the rules a bitOK, OK,technically, Proto Labs isnt close to being a pure-play 3D printing stock. Last quarter, a mere 7.8% of Proto Labs revenue was generated by 3D printing activities. However, this doesnt change the fact that its quick-turn manufacturing services can rapidly take a customer from early-stage 3D-printed prototypes to mid-volume manufacturing runs in the tens of thousands of units using real manufacturing processes like CNC machining and injection molding.

At its core, Proto Labs utilizes cutting-edge automation technology that the company claims makes it the worlds fastest manufacturer for machined and molded parts. This competitive advantage, coupled with its emphasis on customer experience, has allowed the company to grow sales like gangbusters in recent years.

Beyond speed, no other company matches the breadth of manufacturing services that Proto Labs offers under one roof, likely because the level of capital and resources required to replicate Proto Labs business model in its entirety would be prohibitively high.

Looking ahead, Proto Labs continued path to growth is clear, and involves bringing new manufacturing services and materials online that expand its addressable market, which would in turn give it an opportunity to compete for more product developers business across the globe.

As exciting as Proto Labs business prospects are, the companys growth trajectory isnt free from risk. The nature of Proto Labs quick-turn manufacturing operating model means that it rarely maintains an order backlog to buffer itself during periods of economic uncertainty should customers decide to postpone or cancel orders.

To be brutally honest, a period of economic uncertainty is inevitable at some point, and would likely cause Proto Labs shareholders to experience high volatility if customer orders suddenly dried up.

Investors who can endure this potential volatility may find comfort in knowing that Proto Labs technology-agnostic approach is built to last, because it allows the companys business model to be highly adaptable. Should a promising manufacturing or 3D printing technology enter the market, Proto Labs could merely acquire said technology, offer it as a service, and continue serving its product developers without skipping much of a beat.

Buying is just the beginningBecause the 3D printing industry is expected to grow dramatically in the coming years, its inviting new forms of competition seeking to cash in on the potential spoils. Well-funded start-ups, academic institutions, and technology giants all have plans to enter the 3D printing space in the coming years. With increased competition on the horizon, the industry is sure to become more cutthroat, and R&D budgets could balloon to help existing 3D printing stocks cultivate new levels of innovation.

For investors considering taking the plunge into 3D printing stocks, the industry dynamics at play will require regular monitoring for material developments that could undermine an investment thesis. As long as the underlying business fundamentals of a 3D printing stock remain intact, enjoy whats sure to be a wild ride.

In the next three years, they will be setting up factories in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Morocco, Tunisia, United States and 20 other countries.
